CALIENTE

Chapter One

Doc Michaels and Marilyn arrive at the exclusive Caliente resort, a sun-drenched haven where every predictable routine soon yields to sharp, irresistible human complication.

The Arrival

An Observational Comedy Unfolds

The bougainvillea-draped entrance to Caliente shimmered under the Florida sun, a postcard of manufactured serenity. Doc, navigating his power chair with a practiced ease that belied its bulk, offered Marilyn a wry glance. "Another paradise, my dear," he murmured, the hum of his chair a counterpoint to the distant, muffled laughter from the pool. She adjusted her wide-brimmed hat, her expression a careful blend of anticipation and mild skepticism. The air, thick with the scent of jasmine and chlorine, promised a certain kind of escape.

A golf cart, pristine and silent, glided to meet them, driven by a young man whose smile was as polished as the resort's marble floors. He spoke of amenities and activities with an almost reverent tone, as if reciting scripture. Marilyn, ever the pragmatist, inquired about the nearest grocery store. Doc, meanwhile, observed the subtle dance of new arrivals and seasoned residents, already cataloging the micro-expressions, the unspoken hierarchies, the quiet comedies playing out beneath the veneer of leisure. Caliente, it seemed, was less a place to relax and more a stage for human nature.

From the Text

The true measure of a resort, Doc often mused, was not its thread count, but the density of its unexamined lives.
